Why I Ditched the Drinks and Found My Superpower: The Truth About Going Alcohol-Free
Dec 11, 2024
Breaking the Myth
For years, I thought alcohol was my social lubricant, stress reliever, and the magical elixir that made life’s highs higher and lows bearable. Nights out weren’t complete without a glass in hand, and bad days often ended with “just one drink” that inevitably turned into more. It wasn’t until I took a step back that I realised what I thought was my superpower was my kryptonite.
What happened next changed my life forever: I gave up alcohol, and in doing so, I found a version of myself I never knew existed.
Spoiler alert: ditching the drinks wasn’t just about abstinence. It was about discovering a superpower I didn’t even know I had—clarity, confidence, and control over my life.
The Moment I Realised Something Had to Change
It didn’t happen overnight. Like many people, I believed I didn’t have a “problem” because I wasn’t drinking every day. But the truth? My relationship with alcohol was complicated.
I noticed a pattern: if I was stressed, I drank. If I was celebrating, I drank. If I was bored, you guessed it—I drank.
Over time, I started questioning why I needed to reach for a drink in every situation. And more importantly, what was it costing me?
That lightbulb moment came when I woke up one morning after a “few too many” with a splitting headache, a foggy mind, and the weight of shame pressing down on me, not to mention a 9-month-old. I realised I was stuck in a cycle I didn’t want to be in anymore.
I wanted freedom—freedom from waking up groggy, freedom from wondering if I’d said something I shouldn’t have, and freedom to live a life that felt authentic.
Why Going Alcohol-Free Feels Like Gaining a Superpower
The decision to stop drinking wasn’t easy. Society normalises alcohol in every aspect of life. It’s on TV, at parties, even at work functions. So, when you opt-out, it can feel like stepping off the main stage of life. But here’s what no one tells you: stepping off that stage puts you in the director’s chair.
Here’s what I gained:
1. Mental Clarity
Alcohol had been a fog machine in my brain, dimming my creativity, decision-making, and self-awareness.
Within weeks of going alcohol-free, the fog lifted. I started seeing my life and goals with razor-sharp clarity. It felt like I had unlocked a mental superpower that made me unstoppable in my personal and professional life.
2. Emotional Resilience
I used to numb uncomfortable feelings with a glass (or three) of wine. Going alcohol-free forced me to face those emotions head-on. Was it hard? Absolutely. But in doing so, I built a resilience that made me stronger, more self-aware, and more in control of my emotional well-being.
3. Energy Like Never Before
Forget coffee. Waking up without a hangover or sluggishness gave me a natural energy boost I hadn’t felt in years. I was more productive, focused, and motivated to tackle my goals.
4. Confidence That Can’t Be Bottled
There’s nothing more empowering than knowing you don’t need a drink to be fun, engaging, or confident.
Showing up as my authentic self—no liquid courage required—was a game-changer.
Challenges Along the Way (And How I Overcame Them)
it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Breaking up with alcohol came with its challenges.
1. Social Pressure
When you say no to alcohol, people notice. Some were curious, others were supportive, but a few made me feel like I was the odd one. I learned to hold my ground by reframing my choice: I wasn’t giving something up; I was gaining something better.
2. Dealing with Triggers
There were moments when I wanted to pour a drink, whether it was stress or habit. I tackled this by finding alternatives, like herbal teas or sparkling water, and building new habits, like journaling or taking walks when I felt overwhelmed.
3. FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)
At first, I worried I’d miss out on fun experiences. The truth? I didn’t miss a thing. If anything, I became more present in the moments that mattered, creating deeper connections and memories that weren’t clouded by alcohol.
The Unexpected Gifts of Going Alcohol-Free
What surprised me most about ditching the drinks was how it transformed every area of my life:
• Relationships: My connections became more meaningful. I built real connections with great people who aligned with my values. I listened better, communicated more openly, and surrounded myself with people who valued me for who I was.
• Health: My sleep improved, my skin glowed, and I felt fitter.
• Finances: The money I used to spend on drinks now goes toward experiences and hobbies that bring me joy.
But perhaps the most significant gift was rediscovering who I was without the haze of alcohol. I found an unapologetic, authentic, and thriving version of myself.
Is Going Alcohol-Free Right for You?
You don’t need to hit “rock bottom” to reconsider your relationship with alcohol. Maybe you’ve been wondering if your occasional drinks have turned into a crutch. Maybe you’re curious about what life could look like without it. Whatever the case, I can tell you this: going alcohol-free isn’t about deprivation; it’s about liberation.
If you’re unsure where to start, here are a few steps:
1. Reflect: Ask yourself why you drink and what role alcohol plays in your life.
2. Experiment: Try going alcohol-free for 30 days and observe how you feel.
3. Seek Support: Connect with communities, programs, or resources that align with your goals.
The Final Pour
Ditching alcohol was the best decision I ever made—not because it was easy, but because it was worth it. My life didn’t just improve; it transformed.
