When I decided to go alcohol-free, I knew it would change my life, but I didn’t expect just how deeply it would impact me. I anticipated feeling better physically—better sleep, more energy—but what really surprised me were the unexpected shifts that came along the way. Now, looking back on my first 100 days without alcohol, I realise it was one of the most transformative decisions I’ve ever made.
In February 2025, I’ll be celebrating six years of sobriety. Over the years, I’ve been able to support others on their own alcohol-free journeys, but those first 100 days were packed with lessons and challenges that shaped the path ahead. Here’s what I learned and what I didn’t see coming when I took that first step toward sobriety.

The Decision to Go Alcohol-Free
For a long time, alcohol was just part of my daily routine. I’d have a glass of wine with dinner or share drinks with friends over the weekend. It felt like something everyone did, and I didn’t give it much thought—until I became a mother.
Motherhood changed everything. Suddenly, I wasn’t just living for myself. I had this little person looking up to me, depending on me to be present and attentive. The late nights and the groggy mornings after drinking no longer fit into the life I wanted for us. I needed more energy and clarity to be the best version of myself for my daughter and for my own well-being.
That’s when I knew I had to make a change. Giving up alcohol wasn’t just about me anymore—it was about my family and the kind of mother I wanted to be. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I also knew that I was ready to take control of my life and let go of the things that were holding me back.

I didn’t realise how much becoming a mother would shift my relationship with alcohol. It wasn’t just about feeling better physically—it was about showing up fully for my daughter, and I realised alcohol was taking that away from me. The decision to quit wasn’t just about health; it was about gaining the focus, strength, and presence I needed to be the kind of parent I wanted to be.

The Physical Changes
One of the first things I noticed after quitting alcohol was how much my body responded to the change. I expected some improvements, but I wasn’t prepared for just how much better I would feel, inside and out.

Better Sleep
The first big shift I noticed was in my sleep. Before, even after just one or two drinks, I’d wake up feeling tired no matter how early I went to bed. It turns out alcohol was seriously disrupting my sleep, especially the deep, restorative stages like REM sleep. Within days of quitting, I started waking up feeling genuinely rested, and my energy stayed more consistent throughout the day.

Higher Energy Levels
Speaking of energy, my levels skyrocketed after I quit. Without alcohol draining me, I had more stamina to tackle my day. In the past, I would hit a slump in the afternoon and blame it on stress or lack of sleep, but I now realise alcohol was playing a big role in that dip. Once it was out of the picture, I felt more balanced and capable of handling everything that came my way.

Physical Health Improvements
There were other physical changes, too:

• Clearer skin: My skin looked brighter, clearer, and less puffy without the dehydrating effects of alcohol.
• Weight loss: I wasn’t trying to lose weight, but I shed kilos naturally. Cutting out alcohol (and the late-night snacks that often followed) helped me feel lighter and healthier.

I hadn’t realised how much alcohol was impacting my physical health until I quit. The improvements in my skin, energy, and overall well-being happened so quickly, and it made me realise just how much alcohol had been holding me back physically.

The Mental and Emotional Shifts
The most unexpected changes came in my mental and emotional well-being. I didn’t expect quitting alcohol to have such a profound effect on my mood, focus, and overall clarity.

Emotional Stability
Within a few weeks of being sober, I noticed a big change. I wasn’t as reactive or anxious, and my moods were much more stable. Alcohol had been contributing to emotional ups and downs that I hadn’t even noticed until I experienced life without it. I felt more grounded and better able to handle stress.

Clearer Thinking
Without alcohol clouding my thoughts, I noticed a big difference in my ability to focus. I wasn’t expecting this, but I found that I could think more clearly and stay on task much longer. The fog that had been in my head for so long lifted, and I felt sharper and more productive in both my personal and professional life.

Reconnecting with Creativity
Another surprising benefit of quitting alcohol was how it reignited my creativity. I used to think that alcohol helped me relax and get into a creative mindset, but I quickly realised that I was more creative, inspired, and motivated without it. I found new energy to pursue old hobbies and explore new ideas with a fresh perspective.
The clarity and emotional stability I gained after quitting were some of the biggest and most unexpected rewards of my alcohol-free journey.

Navigating Social Situations
One of the biggest challenges I faced in my first 100 days without alcohol was figuring out how to navigate social events. Alcohol is such a big part of how we celebrate and connect with others that it was hard to imagine going without it at first.

Feeling Awkward
At the beginning, I often felt out of place at social gatherings. Without a drink, I wasn’t sure how to act or what to say. It was an adjustment to be at parties or dinners without alcohol as a social crutch, and I didn’t expect to feel so awkward.

Handling Social Pressure
Another challenge I didn’t anticipate was how often others would encourage me to drink. People would say things like, “Just have one,” or “Why aren’t you drinking?” It was hard at first to explain why I wasn’t drinking without feeling like I had to justify my decision. But over time, I became more comfortable with standing firm in my choice.

Finding New Ways to Connect
Eventually, I found new ways to connect with people that didn’t revolve around alcohol. I discovered non-alcoholic drinks I actually enjoyed, like mocktails, and started seeking out social activities that didn’t involve drinking, like hiking or game nights with friends. These experiences helped me realise that I could still have fun and make meaningful connections without alcohol.

Socialising without alcohol was hard at first, but I soon learned that I didn’t need a drink to connect with people. In fact, my relationships deepened, and I started to appreciate more meaningful conversations and experiences once alcohol wasn’t in the mix.

Final Reflections and Lessons Learned
As I approach six years of sobriety in February 2025, I can honestly say that quitting alcohol has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Those first 100 days were full of surprises—some difficult, some rewarding—but they laid the foundation for a more balanced, clear, and fulfilling life.
Being able to support others in their alcohol-free journeys has been one of the most meaningful parts of my experience, and I often reflect on how far I’ve come since those early days. Sobriety has given me the clarity and focus I need to be fully present in my life, especially as a mother. I’ve gained more than I ever could have imagined by giving up alcohol.

If you’re thinking about taking a break from alcohol, I encourage you to give it a try. It’s not always easy, but the rewards—better health, stronger relationships, and a clearer mind—are worth it. Take that first step, and you might be surprised by just how much you gain when you let alcohol go.
